As more details concerning the shooting of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy's wife Mia become public, the picture becomes clearer - and more distressing.
According to The Athletic, Bieniemy's 27-year-old son Elijah - who has been arrested and charged with crimes relating to the shooting - allegedly called the police to complain that his parents were withholding his firearms from him.
Though it's not formally confirmed that it was Elijah who made the call, public records show that a 27-year-old man calling from the Bieniemy home told police that “his parents are withholding his weapons and that he’s a certified UFC fighter so now he feels like he cannot defend himself.” The report also states that the caller was "rambling on" about his CPR license and inability to help.
The UFC told TMZ that Bieniemy is not affiliated with them.
The Shooting
Mia Bieniemy was seriously injured in a shooting at the couple's home in Ashburn, Virginia, on July 26. Loudoun County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call at about 7:32 p.m. and found her suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was hospitalized in serious condition but was later reported to be stable and improving. She was recently transferred out of intensive care.
Eric Bieniemy was in Missouri with the Chiefs at training camp when the shooting occurred and subsequently stepped away from the team.

Authorities arrested Elijah Bieniemy in connection with the shooting. He currently faces charges of malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling, and was initially held without bond.
His attorney has requested a mental-health evaluation, saying Elijah appeared unable to assist in his defense. The judge in the case has granted the request. It remains to be seen what the evaluation will show.
