The Pittsburgh Pirates are adding another option to their position-player group ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Los Angeles Angels, recalling outfielder Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioning infielder/outfielder Nick Yorke.
The Pirates announced the move Sunday, Sept. 6, shortly before the two teams met at PNC Park with the three-game series tied 1-1.
Simon returns to Pittsburgh after appearing in nine major league games earlier this season. He went 9-for-31 during that stretch, hitting .290 with one double and two RBIs.
The 26-year-old gives Pittsburgh another versatile option as the club looks to finish the series with a win. The roster adjustment follows Saturday’s 6-1 loss, which came despite Bryan Reynolds going 3-for-3 with a home run.
Simon can provide additional depth around the outfield while also giving the Pirates another potential bat off the bench. His previous production in a limited sample gives Pittsburgh an intriguing option for the finale.
Yorke, meanwhile, is heading back to Indianapolis after struggling to find consistent production during his major league opportunity. The 24-year-old has hit .212/.284/.279 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 40 games this season.
Yorke appeared in Saturday’s loss as a substitute and drew a walk in his only plate appearance. His option opens a spot for Simon as Pittsburgh continues evaluating its roster during the final weeks of the season.

The Pirates enter Sunday at 70-73 and sit fourth in the National League Central. The Angels are 54-88 and remain last in the American League West.
The finale also features a notable pitching matchup, with Pittsburgh sending Paul Skenes to the mound against Los Angeles right-hander Walbert Ureña. Skenes enters with a 9-11 record and 3.97 ERA, while Ureña is 9-9 with a 2.85 ERA.
Simon now gets another opportunity to make an impact as Pittsburgh tries to claim the series at home.
