A photo of Lindsey Vonn taken at the beginning of her downhill run at the Winter Olympics is getting a lot of attention not because of anything unusual in the picture itself, but because of what happened moments later.

In the breathtaking image, Vonn makes contact with the first gate on her run down the mountain. Less than a second later, she lost her balance, leading to a heavy crash that brought the race to a halt.

Medical teams attended to her on the slope for several minutes before she was airlifted off the piste, prompting concerned applause from spectators who have seen her achieve so much success on the same course in the past.

Vonn, 41, was already taking a major risk by competing. She had ruptured ligaments in her left knee only days earlier during the final World Cup race before the Games, but still chose to line up for her strongest event. She successfully completed two training runs on the demanding Olimpia delle Tofane course and appeared confident about giving it one last push.

The emotional moment after Vonn's crash affected fellow American Breezy Johnson, who had already completed her run and was watching from the finish area. Johnson later secured the gold medal with a time of 1 minute 36.10 seconds, while Germany’s Emma Aicher took silver and Italy’s Sofia Goggia claimed bronze.

Vonn’s decision to compete despite the injury showed the determination that has defined her career, which includes multiple comebacks after serious leg injuries. She had returned to competition in 2024 after retiring in 2019 and even enjoyed a strong 2025–26 season.

But after this latest crash, it now seems unlikely that she will compete in the remaining events, meaning her Olympic career may have come to a sudden and emotional end.
