Phoenix Mercury Post Classless Tweet After Dirty Hit on Caitlin Clark

The Phoenix Mercury should win an award for creating the most tone-deaf social media post of the WNBA season.

On Wednesday night, the Mercury defeated the Indiana Fever on the road due to strong performances from Kahleah Cooper and Alyssa Thomas. However, the latter's performance was overshadowed by her decision to hit Caitlin Clark in the throat with her fist.

Clark left the game in the third quarter due to a back injury. It's unclear if her injury occurred during her scuffle with Thomas in the second period.

After the Mercury secured a 111-109 win over the Fever, the official X account for Phoenix posted a stick figure with the caption, "De-Wanna piece of this?!?" Unsurprisingly, fans found this post to be classless give Clark's injury situation.

"Nice to know a team condones violent assault on a player," one fan said sarcastically.

"Posting a graphic of a player on the ground after tonight’s assault is actually insane," a second fan wrote.

"It is inappropriate for an official team account to post something like this after one of its players assaulted another team player," another person commented.

"Whole organization needs to be fined and have a draft pick taken from them" a fan replied. "This is bush league."

Fever call out the refs.

Fever coach Stephanie White put the WNBA's officials on blast after Wednesday night's loss to the Mercury.

“We have a generational talent and WNBA superstar who had two cheap shots [against her] right there that weren’t called,” White said. “Absolutely unacceptable.”

White continued, "Clark is not called the same way as everybody else is called. The fist in the throat is crazy. It’s crazy. It’s dangerous."

The Fever have not yet issued an update on Clark's back injury. Hopefully, she won't miss an extended period of time.
