After a tough loss a week ago, Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper called on the front office for some help.
In the midst of a sweep by the Miami Marlins, the nine-time All-Star was hesitant when asked if his club had what they needed to be competitive in October, saying that they have done a good job all year but need some "reinforcements."
This message was seemingly not received well by manager Don Mattingly who a clear response to Harper's comments via MLB.com.
“I sense Bryce thinking about it,” Mattingly said. “I don't really sense anybody else thinking about it, honestly. I’ve been through this. Guys want to be GMs, what you need without a real understanding of where the organization is, exactly where this thing goes. Not only this year, but moving forward. So, I mean, players like being GMs and making calls and spending other people's money. So, let it go at that.”
Regardless, the comment got through to where it needed to, as Philadelphia made a big splash in acquiring All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez in a deal that happened in large part due to Harper's flexibility.
As trade chatter heated up surrounding Arraez, who is having a career year for the selling San Francisco Giants, the eight-year veteran made it clear that he would not change positions if he was dealt after struggling to juggle a utility role last season.
Sticking at second was a prudent move for Arraez, who ranks second in MLB with 11 Outs Above Average while leading the National League with a .324 batting average.
But this meant that making the move possible would cause some reshuffling in the Phillies' infield. Harper, ready for this exact scenario, brought his outfield glove with him to the last road trip. Now, it appears he will get to use it again full time.
Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reported the changes that are expected to take hold moving forward, saying that Harper will move back to the outfield to clear room for Alec Bohm at first base, and Bryson Stott will play third to clear room for Arraez at second.
While Harper has stuck only at first base for each of the last four seasons since moving there in 2023, he is certainly no stranger to the outfield. The 15-year vet spent the first decade of his career in the outfield, logging most of his time in right field, where he is most likely to slot in every day now.
Harper may have to knock some rust off at the position, having been out of full-time outfield duty since 2021. The same could be said for Stott, who has been a steady glove at second but played just two games at third base in his career.
The growing pains could be real for all players involved, but considering the lack of right-handed outfield bats on the market, Dave Dombrowksi determined that moving Harper would be the best way to maximize the lineup. With the deal now done ahead of Monday's deadline, they will have the rest of the season to work out the kinks for a postseason run.
