The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to remain a contender in a competitive National League this year, and if they do, first basemanBryce Harper will need to be a driving force in their lineup.

This offseason has been eventful for Harper, as his relationship with Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has remained tense following Dombrowski’s public comments questioning Harper’s long‑term outlook, particularly after his 2025 performance.

Harper posted a .261 batting average, .357 on‑base percentage, .844 OPS, 27 home runs and 75 RBIs across 132 games. Those are still elite numbers, yet expectations for Harper naturally remain higher.

Across 14 MLB seasons, the 33‑year‑old veteran has collected a Rookie of the Year Award, two MVPs, eight All‑Star selections and four Silver Sluggers.

Regardless of the noise, Harper’s focus has shifted back to baseball with players trickling into spring training this week. He will not spend all of March with the organization, as he is set to make his international debut for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

Harper attempted to play in the 2023 WBC, but Tommy John surgery and the recovery process forced him to withdraw.

This year’s tournament does not begin for a couple more weeks, giving Harper time to settle into camp and work with the Phillies’ coaching staff before joining Team USA.

On Friday, Phillies manager Rob Thomson provided an update on Harper’s arrival timeline: “Rob Thomson said Bryce Harper will likely report on Sunday,” reported Destiny Lugardo of Phillies Nation.

Harper is still under contract on the 13‑year, $330 million deal he signed in 2019, giving the Phillies plenty of runway with their franchise superstar. But he remains determined to add a World Series title to his list of accomplishments and bring a title to Philadelphia.

The last two years, Harper and the Phillies have thrived in the regular season, winning back‑to‑back NL East titles, yet they have nothing to show for it after being eliminated in the division series both times.

With a fresh start, a healthy offseason and another chance to lead a championship push, Harper enters 2026 with as much motivation as ever to deliver the postseason breakthrough the city has been waiting for.
