The Philadelphia Phillies have emerged as a team targeting an unexpected player.
Philadelphia currently feels like a team that is desperately waiting for some Trade Deadline action. The team has lost seven of their last eight games and as first basemanBryce Harper put it, “we need some help.”
The team has three clear needs, a right-handed bat, a starting pitcher and bullpen pieces.
The target for the right-handed bat has been long expected to be an outfielder, but Philadelphia may be turning in a different direction.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Phillies have had conversations with the Los Angeles Angels about star shortstop Zach Neto.
Neto has had himself a nice year in Anaheim. The 25-year-old is slashing .232/.324/.433, good for a .757 OPS, along with 19 home runs, 46 RBI and 14 stolen bases.
While Neto's right-handed power would be a great addition to the Phillies struggling lineup, it begs the question about what happens to Phillies' shortstop Trea Turner.
Turner signed a mega-deal with the Phillies before the 2024 season and has not produced as many had hopes.
The most troubling development being his defense at shortstop. As of July 30, Turner ranks first in the league in errors with 19.
Phillies fans have been clawing at the idea of Turner moving positions, particularly to the outfield.
The 33-year-old has some experience playing in centerfield with the Washington Nationals in 2016 as well as the minor leagues.
While it would be a large adjustment for the team, it could help improve the overall lineup and defense.
Monday's Trade Deadline is quickly approaching, and this trade could be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
