The Philadelphia Phillies have made a decision on their young starter.

Following their 12-4 loss to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday, the Phillies announced that they have optioned right-handed rookie Andrew Painter to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. A corresponding move has yet to be made.

Painter made the start today, but lasted just two innings and surrendered six earned runs and two home runs in the contest. As a result, the Phillies opted to demote him to the minor leagues.

In 14 appearances (12 starts) and 65 innings in his first season in the big-leagues, Painter has a brutal 1-8 record, 7.06 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 53 strikeouts, with 51 hits and 14 home runs allowed. Opposing batters have hit .316 against Painter this year.

This is hardly the type of debut season that the Phillies envisioned for the 23-year-old former top prospect. Painter was selected by the Phillies at No. 13 overall in the first-round of the 2021 MLB Draft and the organization has high hopes for him.

Painter made his MLB debut on March 31, tossing 5.1 innings of one-run ball against the Washington Nationals and picked up the victory. However, it has all been down hill for him since his first outing in the majors. He has given up 50 earned runs in 59.2 innings following his first start and has suffered eight straight losses.

The Phillies must hope that Painter can go back to Triple-A and rediscover his dominance as well as his confidence. Painter had a 2.31 ERA in spring training, which earned him a spot in the Phillies' starting rotation to open the season.

Painter missed the 2023 and 2024 minor league seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He returned during the Arizona Fall League in 2024 and impressed before posting a 5.40 ERA in Triple-A last season.

The Phillies started off an abysmal 9-19 to begin the 2026 season, which resulted in the firing of manager Rob Thomson. Since Don Mattingly took over as the interim skipper, Philadelphia is 31-15 and currently holds the second NL Wild Card spot by 1.5 games.
