The Philadelphia Phillies were among the most aggressive buyers prior to Monday’s trade deadline during the 2026 MLB season, as the team looks to strengthen its roster ahead of a postseason push. After the deadline, the Phillies sit at 60-53 and enter Tuesday’s game against the Washington Nationals in possession of the final National League Wild Card spot.

Philadelphia addressed several needs before the deadline, acquiring four-time All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez, veteran reliever Brooks Raley, and a handful of other additions. However, one area many believed the club could still address was the starting rotation, particularly with veteran Aaron Nola enduring one of the toughest seasons of his career.

Despite speculation surrounding a potential addition, including reported interest in starters such as Casey Mize, Robbie Ray, and Kevin Gausman, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski revealed the organization ultimately decided to stick with its current rotation.

According to Ty Daubert of Phillies Nation, Dombrowski said the club discussed potential deals for starting pitchers but is comfortable moving forward with Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter holding down the back end of the starting rotation.

“Dave Dombrowski said the Phillies talked to teams about starters, but he’s comfortable with Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter as they compete for a playoff spot. Said Painter’s last start and recent minor-league production made a difference in Dombrowski’s confidence,” Daubert shared on X.

Nola has struggled to find consistency throughout the season, posting a 5.55 ERA and a 3-9 record while allowing 28 home runs across 120 innings in 23 starts. While these numbers led to speculation ahead of the deadline, Dombrowski made it clear he still has confidence in the 33-year-old former All-Star.

Rather than adding another starter from outside the organization, Philadelphia will instead rely on Nola to regain his form while counting on Painter to continue his development during the stretch run.
