The Philadelphia Eagles could be forced to expand rookie wide receiver Makai Lemon’s role against the Los Angeles Rams with wide receiver DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and tight end Dallas Goedert (knee) out for Sunday’s game.
Locked On Eagles host Louie DiBiase said the injuries create an immediate opportunity for Lemon and quarterback Jalen Hurts to establish a more dependable connection. Lemon has 7 catches for 38 yards through three games, and the Eagles’ official depth chart lists him among the club’s top three receivers alongside Smith and Dontayvion Wicks.
DiBiase’s argument centers on Lemon’s potential workload rather than a guarantee of production. The rookie has seen limited opportunities beyond screens, but Hurts may need to lean more heavily on Lemon over the middle of the field and in third-down situations.
The quarterback’s response matters just as much as Lemon’s. DiBiase argued that Hurts has a chance to counter criticism about his ability to operate without a full complement of established targets, particularly if the offense can move the ball through the air instead of relying entirely on running back Saquon Barkley.
Philadelphia’s injury concerns extend beyond its pass catchers. Linebacker Zack Baun (concussion) will also miss the game, though defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who is dealing with a wrist injury, practiced in full Wednesday and Thursday and is expected to play. The depleted lineup leaves little margin against Los Angeles, but it also gives Lemon a chance to show whether he can become a trusted option before the schedule sends the Eagles to London for a Week 5 matchup with Jacksonville.
Sunday’s game at Lincoln Financial Field will test whether the Eagles can manufacture enough offense without two prominent targets. Lemon’s expanded role will be one of the clearest indicators of how prepared the offense is to withstand its most significant injury strain of the season.
