It’s not even 24 hours after star tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL and it now appears that the Philadelphia Eagles are getting ready for a significant rebuild.
On Wednesday, the Eagles announced that they have traded Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2028 NFL Draft.
That makes two starting offensive linemen that the Eagles have lost on top of the slew of other injuries they’re dealing with. And while they’re still firmly in the mix for both the division title and the playoffs at 2-2 right now, fans agree that the team is now in rebuild mode:
“Getting a second round pick back (and fifth) for Cam Jurgens is good value, but also … what plans do the #Eagles have this year for the OL and offense? Is this now a rebuild season? Management would never admit to that,” one user remarked on X.
“After the Cam Jurgens trade, the Eagles now have an additional 2028 first-round pick and 2028 second-round pick. Preparing for some big roster turnover!” wrote another.
“Unironically the eagles might chalk the season tank for arch manning and start the rebuild,” a third mused.
“Eagles about to do a slow rebuild. I won’t be surprised if they just tank and call this season a wrap to get a high draft pick.”

Getting ahead of problems
For over a decade the Philadelphia Eagles have ranked among the most well-run organizations in football due in large part to general manager Howie Roseman’s ability to anticipate problems and maximize value while addressing those problems.
There’s clearly something not right with the organization at this moment, which would explain their 2-2 record and struggles even in their wins.
Is Roseman making a panic move here, or is he setting the team up for yet another long period of sustained success?
