Former Super Bowl MVP Phil Simms has been expressing plenty of confidence that Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is in his last year with the team. He even has an ideal destination for him in mind for next year.
Appearing on Up & Adams, Simms told Kay Adams that he can see the Chargers moving him. When Adams suggested that the Minnesota Vikings might be an ideal next destination, Simms declared that he believes Herbert would be a “perfect” fit for the Minnesota Vikings.
“You are a thousand percent right because he is perfect for the Vikings offense,” Simms told Adams. “Perfect. Getting back there deep, let him get it all together and rip it down the field.”
Simms then dismissed suggestions that the Arizona Cardinals or Miami Dolphins – two struggling teams with quarterback woes – might also be good fits for Herbert.
“They’re too far away and the Dolphins are too far away from everybody,” he said of the Cardinals and Dolphins.
Cart Before the Horse?
It’s been a rough season for Justin Herbert to be sure. He’s on pace for his lowest touchdown rate and highest interception rate of his career and is currently averaging a career-low 187.4 yards per game.
But Herbert is also one year removed from making the Pro Bowl and going 11-5 as a starter. The Chargers aren’t going to just give up on him after one bad year, even if things do bottom out and the coaches wind up benching him to save their jobs.

Herbert is completely uncuttable due to his contract to boot. So even if the Chargers decided that he’s no longer an elite quarterback worth that kind of money, some other NFL team would have to be willing to pay him like an elite one and give the Chargers major trade capital to boot.
Barring something downright unprecedented, there really isn’t much reason to believe that the Chargers’ current struggles will result in Herbert losing his job. The team would find it far easier to just blame this bad season on one of the assistants, or even head coach Jim Harbaugh.
