As the New Orleans Pelicans prepare for their matchup against the Detroit Pistons, there is a notable injury update for the team. Amid another disappointing season that will see them miss the playoffs, the Pelicans have struggled to find consistency despite several roster moves.

The additions of Jordan Poole and Saddiq Bey in 2025, along with the trade for Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks in 2024, signaled an effort to reshape the roster. The team has also seen growth from Trey Murphy III, and when healthy, Zion Williamson remains a major impact player.

Injuries, however, have continued to derail progress. According to the Pelicans’ official X account, Murray is available for the upcoming game. He previously suffered a ruptured right Achilles tendon in January 2025, which sidelined him for an extended period. While he has returned to action this season, his production has yet to fully return to prior levels.

Despite continuing to recover from a significant injury, Murray has shown flashes of his impact in a limited sample size this season. Across 11 games, he is averaging 17.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 6.7 assists while shooting 49.7% from the field and 33.3% from 3-point range.

His production has been more limited compared to his 2023-24 season with the Atlanta Hawks, when he averaged 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.4 assists over 78 games. When fully healthy, he brings strong rebounding for his position, efficient midrange scoring, and creative playmaking, along with disruptive defense.

The Pelicans have also seen encouraging performances from Murphy III, Derik Queen, and Bey this season. Their development could be key as the Pelicans look ahead, with hopes of turning things around and becoming more competitive next season.

A former Washington standout and the No. 29 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Murray has developed into a high-level guard when healthy. An All-Star and former steals leader, he built his early career with the San Antonio Spurs before elevating his game with the Hawks alongside Trae Young.

Now with New Orleans, his long-term impact will depend on his recovery from a ruptured right Achilles tendon.

He signed a four-year, $120 million veteran extension beginning in the 2024-25 season, which includes a player option for 2027-28. The Pelicans view him as a key piece of their future backcourt, and if he can return to form, he has the potential to be a major contributor moving forward.
