In the NBA, where greatness is often measured by longevity as much as peak performance, legends eventually face a difficult transition. That reality has sparked an interesting conversation around some of the league’s most iconic names, such as LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant.

The trio has spent years proving they could be the clear first option on championship teams, as seen through several memorable performances, championships, and MVP honors. However, former NBA champion Paul Pierce believes that era may now be coming to an end.

Pierce recently offered a blunt assessment during the latest episode of his podcast 'No Fouls Given'. Speaking about Durant first, he suggested that the forward’s influence on winning has changed compared to his prime years.

“I think at this age he doesn’t influence winning like he did in OKC or Golden State,” he said. “He can’t be the best player on your championship team right now.” The Hall of Famer didn’t stop there. Pierce expanded his take to include two other generational players who remain among the league’s biggest names.

“I say that about him, LeBron, and also say that about Curry right now,” he continued. “They can’t be your best players on championship teams at this stage of their career. They need to play with somebody that’s better than them.”

Considering the resumes involved, it’s a strong claim. LeBron is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, Curry revolutionized modern offense with his three-point shooting, and Durant remains one of the most unstoppable scorers the game has ever seen.

Still, Pierce pointed to one situation that supports his argument. When these veteran stars have another exceptional player who can carry the primary load, the Celtics legend believes their teams appear stronger.

Pierce’s comments may face scrutiny from the NBA world. But as all three players approach the final stages of their careers, only time will tell whether Pierce’s assessment proves right or wrong. Regardless, none of the three has much left to prove after achieving almost everything in their careers.
