Finebaum was born in 1955 in Memphis, Tennessee. While attending the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, he applied for a job as a sportswriter for the Daily Beacon, the university’s student newspaper.
He went on to build a long career as an award-winning sports columnist and investigative reporter, working for the Birmingham Post-Herald and Mobile Register. He later wrote featured columns for Sports Illustrated.
In 2001, Finebaum launched The Paul Finebaum Radio Network.
