The New England Patriots have a lot riding on the 2026 NFL Draft. Getting it right could set the tone for how fast this rebuild moves. But right now, the conversation around the franchise isn't purely about football.
Head coach Mike Vrabel has been at the center of growing scrutiny after photos surfaced showing him with former The Athletic reporter Dianna Russini at an Arizona resort. A controversy after which Russini resigned from the outlet.
The images showed the two in close proximity and drew immediate attention from the NFL world. More reports of past sightings have started following and they are keeping the story alive well into draft week.
However, the Patriots are not wavering despite the noise. The organization put out a public statement of support for Vrabel, with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting the details.
"The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel's decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being. Mike has been open with us about his commitment to being the best version of himself for his family, this team and our fans, and we respect the steps he is taking to follow through on that commitment," the Patriots noted.

Vrabel was away from the facility on Saturday, but the team was quick to frame that as anything but a disruption. New England pointed to the strong communication and leadership Vrabel had already established with the front office throughout the pre-draft process.
With preparations done, the Patriots expressed confidence that general manager Eliot Wolf and the personnel group are more than ready to handle the draft without him present.
The backstory on Vrabel and Russini goes back further than the Arizona photos. Page Six reported the two were spotted together at Tribeca Tavern in New York City on March 11, 2020, seated closely and observed sharing a kiss during early morning hours.
Then TMZ Sports added another layer, publishing a photo of Vrabel and Russini at the Beau Rivage Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, shortly before midnight on January 31, 2024. That sighting came not long after Vrabel parted ways with Tennessee.
A witness told the outlet they recognized Vrabel and assumed the woman with him was his wife before the recent reporting changed that picture.
The Patriots are pressing forward. Draft weekend is here and the focus, at least publicly, is back on football.
