The New England Patriots could be without one of their most important defensive players for Sunday’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez missed Wednesday’s practice with a shoulder injury, raising questions about his availability for Week 4.
ESPN insider Adam Schefter shared the update on X, reporting that Gonzalez did not participate in the Patriots’ first practice of the week. The team officially listed the cornerback with a shoulder injury on its Wednesday report.
Gonzalez’s potential absence would be a significant concern for New England as it prepares to face Josh Allen and Buffalo’s offense. The Patriots enter the matchup at 1-2, while the Bills remain unbeaten at 3-0.
The 2023 first-round pick has established himself as a key part of New England’s secondary. His coverage ability gives the Patriots an important option against opposing wide receivers, particularly in matchups where limiting explosive plays is essential.
Gonzalez also has a history of shoulder trouble. A torn labrum ended his rookie season after just four games in 2023. However, there is no confirmed indication that his current injury involves the same shoulder issue or carries a similar severity.
The timing is particularly challenging with Buffalo coming to town. Allen has the ability to extend plays and attack defenses downfield, making reliable cornerback coverage especially valuable.
New England would have to adjust if Gonzalez cannot play. The coaching staff could rely more heavily on its other cornerbacks, including Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones, while considering how to protect the secondary against Buffalo’s passing attack.

Still, one missed practice does not automatically mean Gonzalez will be ruled out. His participation in the coming practices will provide a clearer picture of his recovery and potential availability.
The Patriots will be monitoring his condition closely as Sunday’s divisional matchup approaches. Until the team releases its final injury designation, Gonzalez’s status remains uncertain.
