The New England Patriots faced a shifting cornerback market after the Seattle Seahawks gave Devon Witherspoon a then-record-setting extension last month, while Christian Gonzalez remained unsigned to his own extension.
However, less than two days before their season opener, New England responded with a record-breaking answer.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Christian Gonzalez has agreed to a four-year, $135 million extension with $102 million guaranteed. The deal carries a $33.75 million average annual value, making Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
Witherspoon had previously held that distinction after signing a four-year, $132 million extension worth $33 million annually with more than $101 million guaranteed.
The Patriots therefore moved their cornerback to the top of the position’s market by adding another $750,000 per year while also giving Gonzalez $1 million more in total guarantees than Witherspoon received.
The agreement also makes Gonzalez the highest-paid player in Patriots history.
New England owner Robert Kraft had publicly stated during training camp that the organization wouldn’t have a problem reaching those heights to keep Gonzalez in tow for the long term.
“We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person,” Kraft said July 25. “That’s why we made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL, and coincidentally the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history.”

The Patriots drafted Gonzalez, 24, with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Gonzalez then earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024.
He followed that with a Pro Bowl season in 2025 and played a major role in New England’s run to Super Bowl LX, finishing the 2025 campaign with 69 tackles and 10 passes deflected across 14 regular-season games.
New England opens the season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, with kickoff set for 8:20 p.m. ET.
