It was 11 years ago this month that former New York Giants pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul suffered a devastating Fourth of July injury.

Pierre-Paul, one of the fiercest pass rushers in the league, was setting off fireworks in Deerfield Beach, Florida. One of the fireworks exploded in his hand. Pierre-Paul was rushed to the hospital, where he had to have his right index finger amputated, while he also lost the top of his thumb and suffered extreme damage to his other fingers.

It's one of the most infamous injuries in recent Fourth of July history. And, it should serve as a warning to athletes - and the general public - everywhere: Fireworks are not to be messed with in a casual way.

Other NFL players have suffered fireworks injuries in recent years, too. Veteran NFL running back Najee Harris suffered an eye injury during a Fourth of July fireworks event in 2025. Former NFL defensive back C.J. Wilson lost two fingers during a fireworks incident back in 2015.

It's safe to say that NFL fans do not love seeing their favorite players setting off their own fireworks. And we don't blame them.

Patrick Mahomes seen setting off his own fireworks on Saturday night

Brittany Mahomes revealed on her Instagram Story that her husband put on a little fireworks show for his wife and children at their home on Saturday evening.

While everything appeared to turn out OK, NFL fans can still be worried with this kind of behavior, as usually, it's just not worth it to mess with fireworks in any form or fashion.

You would honestly think that at this point, NFL teams would have a strict "no fireworks" rule in their contracts.

Hopefully, everyone celebrated the 4th of July in a safe and responsible way on Saturday evening.
