Pat McAfee has turned his post-NFL career into one of the more unusual success stories in sports media, and he's now exploring another avenue outside the broadcast booth.
McAfee released his new album, "The Diary of a Polarizing Figure," on Friday, Aug. 14, adding music to a resume that already includes eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, professional wrestling appearances, "The Pat McAfee Show" and a prominent role on ESPN's "College GameDay."
The project has already caught the attention of one of McAfee's closest college football colleagues. Kirk Herbstreit praised what he heard from the album and then presented McAfee with a request that could potentially bring his newest venture directly to college football fans this season.
Kirk Herbstreit Wants Pat McAfee to Perform on College GameDay
The official "College GameDay" account shared Herbstreit's reaction to McAfee's music Friday.
"You really got some strong lyrics and sent some really good messages," Herbstreit told McAfee. "Can you maybe do some on GameDay?"
College GameDay summarized Herbstreit's request by writing that the longtime ESPN analyst wants to see McAfee perform his music on the show during the upcoming season.
It remains to be seen whether that idea will actually become part of a GameDay broadcast. For now, Herbstreit has at least publicly put the possibility on the table.
It would certainly fit with McAfee's role on the program.
Since joining the show as a full-time analyst in 2022, McAfee has brought a different energy to ESPN's long-running Saturday morning college football show. His interactions with massive crowds have become a regular part of GameDay's on-campus atmosphere.
McAfee Adds Music to Unconventional Post-NFL Career
McAfee's latest project adds another chapter to a career that has consistently moved beyond football.
He played eight seasons for the Colts from 2009 through 2016, earning two Pro Bowl selections and first-team All-Pro honors as a punter.
Following his retirement, McAfee transitioned into sports media and built "The Pat McAfee Show" into a major daily program. He has also worked with WWE and became a full-time member of the College GameDay crew.
Now, music is part of the equation.
Herbstreit's request could eventually bring those two worlds together. With McAfee returning to College GameDay for the 2026 season, fans may have another reason to watch closely when the show hits the road.
If Herbstreit gets his wish, McAfee won't just be talking football on Saturday mornings. He could be performing, too.
