The Baltimore Orioles are turning to Rece Hinds for an offensive spark after dropping their fifth straight game. Baltimore recalled the outfielder from Triple-A Norfolk and designated right-hander Albert Suárez for assignment.
The move came after Saturday’s 5-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox, marking the second consecutive game in which the Orioles were shut out.
Baltimore’s offense has struggled throughout the losing streak, hitting just .207 with a .274 on-base percentage and .308 slugging percentage in September.
Hinds gives the Orioles another power option as they look for more production. The 26-year-old has shown significant raw power during his development, although his previous major league stint produced a .114 batting average in limited action.
The outfielder now gets another opportunity with Baltimore as the club tries to close a growing gap in the American League Wild Card race. The Orioles entered Sunday at 69-74, three games behind the final playoff spot.
To make room for Hinds, Baltimore designated Suárez for assignment. The 36-year-old had provided valuable length for the pitching staff this season, posting a 4.12 ERA across 27 appearances and 59 innings.
Suárez’s final appearance came Saturday against Boston, when he allowed two earned runs and three hits over three innings in relief. His departure opens a roster spot for an offensive player at a time when Baltimore needs its bats to respond.

The Orioles now have little room for another extended slump. With the postseason race tightening, the organization is betting that Hinds can provide some of the power the lineup has been missing.
The roster move also shows how urgently Baltimore is searching for answers. After five straight losses, the Orioles have chosen to sacrifice pitching depth in an attempt to revive their offense.
