The Baltimore Orioles announced an update about their catching position on Thursday.
The Orioles have one of the best catching duos in the league with Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo, even with Rutschman during this some injures this season.
On Sunday, June 28, Baltimore reinstated Rutschman to the active roster after spending time on the seven-day injured list with a concussion.
After being activated, the team choose to designate catcher Sam Huff for assignment.
The 28-year-old only played nine games for the Orioles this season, and struggled at the plate.
In 23 at-bats, Huff slashed .174/.174/.261 with a .435 OPS, four hits, one RBI and 11 strike outs.
Following being designated for assignment, Huff cleared waivers and has elected free agency.
With Baltimore having such great catching depth, it makes a lot of sense why Huff would choice to be a free agent.
Huff is looking for a better opportunity and a chance to truly make a difference on a big league roster.
Huff has played a total of 107 games at the major league level and has performed better than his 2026 slash line.
In his career, Huff has a slash line of .241/.292/.416/.708 with 12 home runs, 25 RBIs and 12 doubles.
The right-handed hitting catcher is solid behind the dish as well, with an elite Pop Time of 1.86 seconds per Baseball Savant.
Huff will certainly receive another shot to play on a big league roster.
A team that could make sense is the division rival New York Yankees, who are in dire need of a solid right-handed catcher.
