The San Francisco 49ers are in a good place ahead of the 2026 season. The team has a franchise quarterback, a solid offensive line, a few elite playmakers, and a stout defense.
The team also has an elite coaching staff and plenty of intriguing young talent. Of course, the team does play in the NFC West, which is probably the toughest division in football. Despite that fact, the 49ers still landed one of the league's easier schedules in 2026.
With those things in mind, it seems like there's no way the 49ers don't return to the postseason in 2026. However, as every 49ers fan knows by now, you can never plan for injuries.
Only Injuries can Hold 49ers Back in 2026
In 2025, the 49ers were once again ravaged by injuries. Brock Purdy, George Kittle, Ricky Pearsall, and Fred Warner were just some of the key players who missed significant time.
Regardless, the team powered through and not only made the playoffs but won a playoff game. That just proved how deep and well-coached the team was and continues to be.
Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report recently identified which teams have the best chance to make the playoffs in 2026. Gagnon put each team into a tier, ranging from "miracle required" to "playoff reservations booked."
The 49ers were in the tier right below "playoff reservations booked," meaning Gagnon thinks it's almost guaranteed the 49ers will make the playoffs.
"Even after getting hammered by injuries in 2025, the 49ers found a way into the postseason in a very strong division," Gagnon said. "It would require a blowup for them to fall short in 2026, but that's always possible considering their snakebitten recent history."
As Gagnon mentioned, the 49ers had a successful season in 2025 despite major injuries. As a result, it seems like only several catastrophic injuries could keep the team from doing the same in 2026.
Unfortunately, the 49ers already have several players dealing with injuries. George Kittle and Mykel Williams are still recovering from injuries sustained last season, while Ricky Pearsall is already out for the year.
What if Kittle and Williams aren't at 100% to start the season, and they progress slowly? Star running back Christian McCaffrey played in all 17 games last year, but he has a lengthy injury history of his own. Fred Warner is a key piece of the defense, but he's coming off a serious injury- will he be the same player?
Only one thing is certain- if the 49ers stay healthy, they will be a contender in 2026.
