One year ago today, the Toronto Blue Jays ended months of uncertainty by signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a 14-year, $500 million extension.

The deal, announced April 9, 2025, was the largest in Blue Jays history by a wide margin, easily surpassing George Springer’s six-year, $150 million contract. In present value, it ranked as the second-largest contract in MLB history, trailing only Juan Soto’s $765 million deal with the New York Mets. The extension contained no deferrals and runs through the 2039 season, when Guerrero will be 40 years old, making it a deal that locks him in as a Blue Jay for life.

The extension capped a months-long negotiation that nearly fell apart. Toronto and Guerrero had been working toward a deal during the offseason but missed an initial deadline in February. Guerrero reportedly broke off talks before spring training without fully closing the door. He had reportedly made it clear that he wanted $500 million, and he got exactly that.

Guerrero had been part of the Blue Jays organization since the team signed him as a 16-year-old out of the Dominican Republic in July 2015. Born in Montreal while his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero Sr., played for the Expos, the younger Guerrero debuted in 2019 as the top prospect in baseball and quickly became the face of the franchise. In eight seasons with Toronto, he has hit .288 with 184 home runs and 595 RBI, earning five All-Star selections, two Silver Slugger awards, and a Gold Glove.

"I always thought about this. Always. Since I signed here, I always thought I was going to be a Blue Jay forever," Guerrero said at a press conference. "That's what happened today. Thank God we did it. I'm going to be a Blue Jay forever."

The deal had an immediate impact on the 2025 Blue Jays. With the uncertainty resolved, Toronto went on to win 94 games, claim the American League East title and advance deep into October. Guerrero batted .292 with 23 home runs and an .848 OPS over 156 regular-season games, then turned in one of the greatest postseason runs in franchise history. He slashed .414/.493/.776 with eight home runs and 15 RBI across 14 playoff games, earning ALCS MVP honors.

One year ago today, the Blue Jays made Guerrero a Blue Jay for life. What followed made clear the investment was worth every dollar.
