Drake Maye last season was the clear MVP runner-up after getting the New England Patriots to a 14-3 record and the second-highest-scoring offense in the NFL with 28.8 points per game.
However, given that the Pats played a last-place schedule coming off a four-win season the year before, and the offense’s clear drop-off in the postseason, everyone was eager to see how Maye and the offense would fare being the hunted this season.
So far, those who doubted how good New England was, given their strength of schedule, are winning. Through three games, Maye and the offense have scored only 30 offensive points, two touchdowns, three PATs, and five field goals against three division winners: the Seahawks, Steelers, and Jaguars.
After the game, Greg Bedard provided his instant reaction to 98.5 The Sports Hub and talked about how now is the time to have an honest conversation about Drake Maye.
“I think we need to look back and have more of an honest conversation about where Drake Maye was last year and the defenses he faced and the schedule he faced, and his issues in the postseason,” said Bedard.
“In the regular season, yes, he played at an MVP level against the easiest offensive schedule in the league by DVOA, by far, and that’s great. But to go up against the Seattle defense, the defending Super Bowl champions, a good Steelers defense — at least certainly in the front seven- and then a Jaguars team that, quite frankly, they don’t get enough respect for what they did at the end of last season.”
Following New England’s blowout loss in Jacksonville, the Drake Maye doubters will be out in droves as the team gets ready for Josh Allen and the Bills.
Yes, his starting right guard and WR1 are on IR, and two of his most targeted receivers from last season are no longer on the team, but in Josh McDaniels’ offense, Drake Maye must turn things around before his season and future as the Patriots’ quarterback are on the line.
