Thirty-one years ago, Cal Ripken Jr. cemented his place in baseball history by surpassing Lou Gehrig’s legendary consecutive-games record.
On Sept. 6, 1995, the Baltimore Orioles shortstop played his 2,131st consecutive game against the California Angels at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, officially moving past Gehrig’s mark of 2,130 games.
Ripken’s achievement was more than a single milestone. He had been in Baltimore’s lineup every day since May 30, 1982, and continued playing long after breaking Gehrig’s record.
The Orioles legend eventually pushed the streak to 2,632 consecutive games before voluntarily ending it on Sept. 20, 1998. MLB still lists it as one of baseball’s most unbreakable records.
The anniversary arrives during a much different period for Ripken’s former club. Baltimore entered Sunday at 69-74 and on a five-game losing streak, leaving the Orioles fighting to stay within reach of the American League Wild Card race.
Meanwhile, another player is quietly building a remarkable streak of his own.
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson has played 924 consecutive games, making him the longest-active streak holder in MLB and eighth on the all-time list.

Olson’s 2026 season has also included 37 home runs and 80 RBIs, adding significant offensive value to his everyday availability.
Still, the distance between Olson and Ripken’s record shows just how extraordinary the Orioles legend’s accomplishment remains. Olson would need another 1,708 consecutive games to match Ripken’s final total.
Ripken’s record has survived nearly three decades, and the modern emphasis on rest and player workload makes the possibility of another player approaching 2,632 games increasingly difficult to imagine.
