The last few weeks have been rough for quarterback John Mateer and the Oklahoma Sooners. After losing to Michigan in Week 2 and barely beating lowly New Mexico at home last week, his rough start today has gotten on fans’ last nerve.
In the first half of today’s game against Georgia, Mateer had a downright nightmarish performance. He was 15 of 19 for 139 yards and an interception while taking three sacks and committing two momentum-changing fumbles, one of which went all the way back for a Georgia touchdown. He’s offered nothing to the run game either.
The end result was a first half performance where only two of six drives went for more than 20 yards and both ended in turnovers. Georgia leads 28-0 at the half.
Granted, Oklahoma’s awful performance today may have more to do with the Bulldogs being both dominant and the home team, but that’s not going to hack it for Sooners fans.
Time for a Change?
Fans have pretty much made it clear that they’re done with Mateer.
“This is insane ….this week to week with Mateer I’m done,” one fan remarked on X.
“John Mateer the kinda QB that makes you stop watching football and become more productive in real life,” wrote another.
“If Oklahoma doesn’t bench John Mateer, they’re not a serious program,” a third wrote.
“Mark Sanchez… we’re good bro John Mateer is here.”
“Can someone please pack his dorm room up for him?”

At this rate, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables may not have much choice. Even if they don’t bounce back and win this game, the upcoming schedule is downright brutal. With games against arch-rival Texas along with Kentucky and Mississippi State awaiting them after next week’s bye, their hopes of returning to the College Football Playoff could be dead in the water before Halloween.
Has Mateer played his way out of a job?
