Does it feel like there have been more penalty flags than ever during the start of the 2026 NFL season?
You’re not imagining it.
The numbers back it up. The NFL is experiencing more flags than ever four weeks into the start of the 2026 regular season. And it’s a major problem that needs to be addressed, in one way or another.

Warren Sharp outlined the problem.
He noted that through weeks, we have:
- Most penalty flags in 10 years
- Most red zone penalties per game by offenses in NFL history
- Most penalties on third and fourth downs in second half of games in NFL history
- 17 touchdowns nullified by a penalty
“Refs are impacting the most important moments of games unlike we’ve ever seen before in the NFL, and even some of the coaches are speaking up,” he shared.
NFL fans are fed up with the penalty flags
NFL fans aren’t thrilled by this development, obviously.
“Trash to watch for fans. Every single time your team makes a play you’re waiting for the yellow,” one fan wrote.
“Gambling is running the games. Don’t kid yourself. In every aspect of human existence right now, if there is a chance of fraud, there will be fraud. At least the mobs kept it somewhat fair,” one fan added.
“The NFL has too many rules. They have rules they don’t even call anymore (hip drop tackle anyone?) There are 36 possible penalties every snap. The NFL needs to repeal a good chunk of penalties and let these dudes play ball. Effecting the game,” one fan added.
“I do not care about the number of calls. I care if the calls consistent and are they the right calls, and I do not think they are. The NFL has created this problem by allowing players to grab, and the officials have to determine if the grab had too much impact on the play,” one fan added.
The NFL needs to figure it out, because too many penalties can ruin the viewing experience for fans.
