Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh Pirates NRFI (-125)
RHP Shohei Ohtani takes the mound for the Dodgers. He's 6-2 with a minuscule 0.74 ERA on the season as he's clearly on a path toward the Cy Young Award. He hasn't allowed a run in the first thus far. RHP Jared Jones makes his third start of the season. He was great in his second turn, allowing no runs on four hits in five frames. He has been good in the first inning with a 3.00 ERA in his career. We like the NRFI in this one.
Atlanta Braves at Chicago White Sox NRFI (-140)
Braves ace LHP Chris Sale takes the mound with an 8-4 record with a 2.23 ERA. He has a 1.50 ERA in the first frame through 12 starts. The surprising White Sox have another impressive hurler taking the mound. RHP Davis Martin is 8-2 with a 2.61 ERA in a breakout season. He, too, has a 1.50 ERA in the first inning. This is a strong pick for NRFI.
Arizona Diamondbacks at Miami Marlins YRFI (-105)
The D-Backs send RHP Ryne Nelson to the hill with his 2-4 record with 4.60 ERA. He's posted a 6.57 ERA in the first inning this season. The Marlins send RHP Ryan Gusto to the mound as the opener. He has pitched five innings this season and has allowed six runs. Gusto opened one game this year and allowed three runs in that appearance. We could see some fireworks early in this one.
What Does NRFI and YRFI Mean in Baseball?
The term NRFI indicates no runs scored in the first inning. Its opposite, YRFI, indicates yes, a run will be scored in the first inning. It doesn't matter if the run qualifies as an earned run or not. If a run crosses the plate in the first inning for either team, the wager loses for the NRFI side and wins for the YRFI side.
