Atlanta Braves at New York Yankees NRFI (-105)
This matchup cashed an NRFI Friday and Saturday, and we like the potential for it again Sunday. Braves RHP Grant Holmes is 7-4 with a 3.67 ERA on the year, and his first-inning ERA sits at 3.43. He has also fanned 26 batters in 21 first frames. Yankees RHP Cam Schlittler is among the favorites for the AL Cy Young Award at 10-6 with a 2.26 ERA. He got roughed up early in his last turn, which raised his first-inning ERA to 3.38. He has 33 K's in 24 first frames.
Toronto Blue Jays at Philadelphia Phillies NRFI (-115)
Blue Jays RHP Shane Bieber has struggled since returning from injury at 3-2 with a 5.11 ERA. His first-inning ERA is ugly at 9.39, but that doesn't paint the entire portrait. Half of the eight runs he has allowed in the frame came two starts ago, and he has kept it clean in three of four starts. Phils RHP Jesus Luzardo has flown under the radar because of the awesome seasons rotation mates Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sanchez have had. He's 10-5 with a 3.36 ERA, and he's one of the few remaining pitchers with no ERA in the first inning. Along with no ER allowed, he has fanned 25 in 23 opening frames.
Baltimore Orioles at Texas Rangers YRFI (-115)
The O's send LHP Cade Povich to the hill at 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA. It's a small sample size of four starts, but he has allowed three ER for a 6.75 ERA. Rangers RHP Kumar Rocker has improved his numbers overall to 4-8 with a 4.08 ERA, but the opening frame has consistently been an issue. He holds a 7.58 ERA, and opponents hit .321 off him in the first frame.
What Do NRFI and YRFI Mean in Baseball?
The term NRFI indicates no runs scored in the first inning. Its opposite, YRFI, indicates yes, there will be a run in the first inning. It doesn't matter if the run qualifies as an earned run or not. If a run crosses the plate in the first inning for either team, the wager loses for the NRFI side and wins for the YRFI side.
