It’s the second-to-last day of the regular season. LHP Blake Snell makes his final tuneup for the playoffs against the San Francisco Giants with an NRFI in mind. The Houston Astros and the Athletics have starters susceptible to runs in the first. The New York Mets and Washington Nationals are also on a collision course for a YRFI.
Saturday is a lighter schedule than normal after a couple of games were moved up to Friday due to a forecasted nor’easter and sustained inclement weather in the northeast. Action begins at 12:35 p.m. ET, so be the early bird that gets that worm.

The Giants go with LHP Matt Wilkinson, who makes his sixth start, at 1-3 with a 3.65 ERA. He has a 5.40 ERA in the first, but opponents hit just .250 off of him. Those three runs came in one start.

New York Mets at Washington Nationals YRFI (-110)
The Mets send RHP Jonah Tong to the mound at 2-2 with a 4.21 ERA. In just three starts, he has a 6.00 ERA in the first frame. LHP Connelly Early makes his Nationals debut at 7-5 with a 3.44 ERA. His first-inning ERA sits at 4.24, and opponents are batting .269 against him in 17 opening frames.
What Do NRFI and YRFI Mean in Baseball?
The term NRFI indicates no runs scored in the first inning. Its opposite, YRFI, indicates yes, there will be a run in the first inning. It doesn’t matter if the run qualifies as an earned run or not. If a run crosses the plate in the first inning for either team, the wager loses for the NRFI side and wins for the YRFI side.
