Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner comprise the top of that next generation right now, but it’s worth looking into how much Djokovic has made over the course of his long, very successful career.

Novak Djokovic’s Personal Life

Djokovic was born May 22, 1987, in Belgrade, then part of a politically uncertain Yugoslavia. Djokovic began training in tennis at the age of six with Jelena Genčić, then attended Nikola Pilić’s academy in Germany at the age of 12, which allowed him to face stronger competition.

He married his high school sweetheart, Jelena Djokovic, in 2014, and the couple shares two children together, Stefan and Tara.

Novak Djokovic’s Professional Career

Djokovic turned pro in 2005 at the Australian Open, then won his first ATP titles in 2006 at Amersfoort and Metz, moving him into the top 20 globally.

Starting in 2007, Djokovic began a run of exceptional play, reaching the 2007 US Open Final and winning the 2008 Australian Open over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. In 2011, he won 10 tournaments including the Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open and became the world No. 1 for the first time.

In 2015, Djokovic produced an incredible season, reaching all four Grand Slam finals and winning three, picking up six Masters 1000 titles and an ATP Finals championship.

After winning Roland Garros in 2016 to complete the Grand Slam, Djokovic suffered an elbow injury in 2017 that kept him off the court until later in 2018. He won Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018, then won Cincinnati to complete the career Golden Masters.

If there was any doubt remaining, Djokovic staved off the turning of the guard in 2024, defeating Alcaraz in two tiebreak sets to secure gold at the Olympics. Djokovic took home his 100th tour-level title in 2025, then made it 21 straight seasons with at least one singles title in 2026.

It’s been an outstanding career for Djokovic, who not only became one of the all-time greats but contributed to the explosion in popularity for the game of tennis in the modern day all across the world.
