Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are coming off a 58-7 stomping of rival Stanford on Saturday to retain control of the Legends Trophy. The victory was the largest margin of victory in the history of the series, with the No. 2-ranked Fighting Irish now extending their double-digit win streak to 16 straight games.
Quarterback CJ Carr was dealing, completing 14 of 20 passes for 181 passing yards and three touchdowns, with running back Aneyas Williams and wide receivers Elijah Burress and Jaden Greathouse as the recipients. Freshman running back Jonaz Walton carried the ball 13 times for a game-high 181 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Not available for the game against Stanford were star cornerback Leonard Moore and linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa. Viliamu-Asa missed the game due to a left thumb injury sustained against the North Carolina Tar Heels. As ESPN’s College GameDay heads to Provo, Utah, for the top-10 matchup between Notre Dame and the No. 8 BYU Cougars, the national attention is on the availability of Notre Dame’s star defenders.
Moore’s status for the Cougars game is still questionable, with Viliamu-Asa announced as available for the game. Ahead of the game, the Fighting Irish went to the social media platform Instagram to make another announcement about their star linebacker.
Notre Dame wrote in the Instagram caption that the 6-foot-3 junior linebacker is a leader on defense and has been named to the Lombardi Award Midseason Watch List.
Junior offensive lineman Anthony Knapp was also named to the watch list.
“A leader on the defense ☘️,” the Notre Dame Fighting Irish wrote. “Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa has been named to the Lombardi Award Midseason Watch List. #GoIrish☘️”
No. 2 Notre Dame will face No. 8 BYU at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on ABC.
