Some Olympic stories don’t feel historic right away they unfold slowly, almost quietly, until suddenly everyone realizes they’re watching something special. That’s been the vibe around Johannes Høsflot Klæbo at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. The Norwegian star arrived with huge expectations already on his shoulders, but instead of trying to force the moment, he’s been building toward it one race at a time.

The men’s 10km interval start looked wide open early on. Several skiers posted fast splits, and for a while France’s Mathis Desloges appeared to be setting the pace. Klæbo, meanwhile, sat off the leaders through the opening checkpoints, skiing with a calm that almost felt calculated.

Then came the shift. As the race moved into its second half, his rhythm changed, the gap shrank, and the familiar Norwegian surge kicked in.

By the time he crossed the line, exhausted but smiling, the result carried more weight than just another gold medal. The victory gave Klæbo his third gold of these Games and pulled him level with the all-time record of eight Winter Olympic golds joining legends like Bjørn Dæhlie and Marit Bjørgen.

And the biggest headline? This story is still unfolding. With relay and distance events still to come, Klæbo isn’t just chasing medals now he’s chasing a place in Olympic history all for himself.

Klæbo was also grabbed the headlines earlier this week when a clip of him running uphill in skis in sub-six minute mile pace went viral and fans could not understand how someone could run that fast uphill on skis. Some truly incredibly display of heart, and inhuman stamina from the Norwegian youngster.
