The #6 North Carolina Tar Heels were facing the #11 VCU Rams in the South Region on Thursday night in another NCAA Tournament matchup. North Carolina had its way with VCU for most of the game. The Tar Heels led 39-28 at halftime and had a 75-70 lead with 1:18 remaining in regulation.
This game somehow went to overtime. VCU won over North Carolina by a final score of 82-78. This was a stunning loss for the Tar Heels, and an amazing comeback win for the Rams. Ever since losing to the Kansas Jayhawks in the national title game in 2022, North Carolina has not had much NCAA Tournament success.
Many people are wondering if head coach Hubert Davis is the right man to lead this program to a national championship or not. He has not won any ACC Tournaments as the head coach of this Tar Heels program. If North Carolina were to move on from, what would it cost this school to do so?

Zac Al-Khateeb of usatoday.com revealed the potential buyout number for Davis and also what his contract currently looks like. Al-Khateeb said about his buyout, "According to Davis' contract, obtained by the USA TODAY Network, North Carolina would own the coach $5.312 million if he were to be fired on April 1."
Will the Tar Heels want to pay him that kind of money to just get him off the books? Al-Khateeb also said about his current contract, "Hubert Davis contract details at North Carolina Supplemental compensation remaining: $11.7 million Length: Contract is six-year deal through June 30, 2030. Base salary remaining: $5.3 million."
Would North Carolina wait another four years for Davis to figure things out? If the Tar Heels do keep him for the 2026-2027 college basketball season, there is no doubt that he is going to be on the hot seat next season. They are going to have to go on a run in the NCAA Tournament next season if he stays, otherwise North Carolina's decision to potentially let him go after next season will be very easy for them.
