Nigeria open their Unity Cup 2026 campaign tonight with a semi-final against Zimbabwe at The Valley in London. This year’s Unity Cup runs from May 26 to May 30 and brings together 4 teams Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Jamaica and India.
Nigeria come in as defending champions and will want to keep their title. Zimbabwe will be looking to push into the final in a knockout game where margins are expected to be small.
There is also a strong sense of familiarity between both sides. Nigeria and Zimbabwe have struggled to separate themselves in recent meetings, with their last 3 encounters all ending level, including two 1-1 draws in World Cup qualifying and a goalless friendly back in 2019.
Nigeria's Eric Chelle is using the Unity Cup to look at new players and different tactical ideas as part of a wider rebuild ahead of upcoming AFCON qualifying campaigns in late 2025. That has opened the door for several fresh faces in the squad alongside more established names.
Zimbabwe have a younger group under interim coach Kaitano Tembo. They still have leadership from experienced players like Marvelous Nakamba and Marshall Munetsi, but they are also dealing with key absences, including Tino Kadewere, which limits their attacking options.
