In today’s college football landscape, money talks. But when Nick Saban speaks, players tend to listen. And for Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, one crucial discussion may have shaped a career-defining decision.
As Simpson prepares for the NFL Draft, rumors about his college options began to resurface. In his latest podcast with David Pollack, the former Alabama star discussed an NIL offer from the Miami Hurricanes that would have made him the highest-paid quarterback in college football.
Simpson did consider the hefty offer but revealed he “didn’t want to do anything sporadic.” The 23-year-old then turned to Alabama legend Saban for advice. The seven-time national champion asked him two very simple questions: “Do you want to play football in college, or do you want to play football professionally?”

Saban further asked Simpson to remove money from the equation before making his decision. The quarterback then clearly shared his desire to play football professionally. “Well, there’s your answer,” said Saban. Despite retiring after the 2023 season, Saban’s influence around Alabama still remains strong.
For Simpson, who had 28 touchdowns last season, reaching out to the Crimson Tide legend shows his mature approach. Now, the NFL Draft prospect would have to land within the top 35 picks to ensure he receives $6.5 million or more in offers.
According to ESPN projections, teams like the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals are expected to target him in the first or second round, which would match the NIL money he passed up from Miami.
