The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to open their 2026 NFL season against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia, with Nick Bosa’s availability one of the biggest storylines following his lengthy recovery from a torn ACL.
NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported Monday that Bosa did not participate in drills during the early portion of San Francisco’s first full practice in Melbourne that was open to reporters.
“Nick Bosa [was] not taking part in drills in the early portion of 49ers practice that was open to the media,” Maiocco reported.
Although the defensive end returned to practice last Wednesday for the first time in nearly a month, Bosa was not seen on the field during that portion of the session.
The pass rusher spent most of training camp dealing with tendinitis in his surgically repaired right knee.
Bosa’s absence from Monday’s open practice does not constitute an official practice designation. According to Maiocco, the 49ers were not required to issue a participation report because of the scheduling circumstances surrounding the international opener.
Kyle Shanahan declined to provide additional injury information Monday.
“Because we’re technically in the future from where we’re from and the Rams are in the present, I don’t have to talk about injuries until tomorrow,” Shanahan said. “So I’m not talking about them.”

Despite Monday’s absence, Bosa has publicly maintained that he expects to play against Los Angeles.
“I’m flying out there, I’m going to f–king play,” Bosa told NBC Sports Bay Area on Wednesday.
The 49ers face the Rams in Melbourne on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
