Who Is Nick Aldis?
To most of the current WWE audience, he is the SmackDown General Manager. He's a a pretty big guy in a suit who books matches and delivers bad news. That role has been his entire on-screen presence since he arrived in 2023.
The résumé underneath it is heavier. Working as Magnus, he was a TNA World Heavyweight Champion and one of the promotion's central figures, then held the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship across a run that rebuilt that title's credibility.
WWE has spent three years using none of that, but it's about to change.
When Was Nick Aldis' Last Match?
July 16, 2023, against Eric Young, per Cagematch. That is a fraction over three years before SummerSlam weekend.
For an authority figure that gap is normal. For a performer who was main-eventing pay-per-views two years earlier it represents a deliberate creative choice, and reversing it is a bigger call than a single match booking. Is Aldis ready to be a full-time wrestler again?
He's a marvelous heel and WWE badly needs someone like him.
Why Is Gunther Facing Nick Aldis At SummerSlam?
The angle ran through Saturday Night's Main Event XLV at Madison Square Garden. Aldis inserted himself into the main event, cost Gunther and Sami Zayn the match against CM Punk and Cody Rhodes, and then hit Gunther with the championship.
That was the payoff to weeks of authority-figure friction, and it moved the story out of the office and into a match. Triple H made it official at Fanatics Fest four days later.
The booking also serves Gunther. He has spent this stretch as an antagonist without a clean opponent, and a returning veteran with a legitimate championship history is a more useful obstacle than another challenger from the roster.
It joins a card that already has Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins, CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes, Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi inside Hell in a Cell, and Liv Morgan vs. Iyo Sky.
What's Next For Nick Aldis?
Aldis has stayed in excellent shape, so it doesn't appear as though he'll need a ton of time to get into form. He's also a veteran of the industry with tons of matches under his belt. As Magnus, he was one of the faces of TNA, and one of the more underrated overall performers in the business. It'll be great seeing him perform again, even if it's just for one more match.
The structural question is whether WWE wants a wrestling General Manager. Two nights of stadium television is a large investment in a return that has no announced follow-up.
