Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns turned a shaky start into a signature finish on Sunday, holding off the Carolina Panthers 21-18 in their home opener at Huntington Bank Field. Watson heard a familiar chorus of boos in warmups, yet walked off with a win that pushed Cleveland to 2-1 this season.
The final numbers hardly told the story because the Browns QB1 finished 16 of 30 for 144 yards, averaging 3.2 yards per attempt through three quarters as the Browns absorbed 12 penalties that repeatedly stalled its offense.
Both touchdown passes found tight end Harold Fannin Jr., and a brief cameo from Shedeur Sanders sent Huntington Bank Field into a frenzy for one snap.

But with 2:29 left and Cleveland trailing 18-13, it looked like Watson’s night would end in disappointment. His deep shot toward the right side was intercepted in the end zone, an apparent touchback that would have sealed the game for Carolina.
That changed instantly when a flag on the other side of the ball reopened the door for Cleveland. Linebacker Bobby Okereke was called for roughing the passer on the same play, and because the penalty occurred before Carolina secured possession, the interception was wiped off the board.
Cleveland instead gained 15 yards and a fresh first down, a reprieve that arrived at the exact moment the Browns needed it most.
Okereke’s hit could carry consequences beyond the box score. Under the NFL’s 2026 fine schedule, a first roughing the passer offense runs $17,911, while a repeat offense jumps to $23,882. A flag alone does not guarantee a fine, and any discipline the league hands down typically surfaces in Saturday’s weekly accountability report.
Watson made the most of it, though. He found Fannin again for a 14-yard touchdown with 1:55 left, then connected with Denzel Boston on the two-point conversion to put Cleveland ahead for good. Ronnie Hickman sealed it moments later, intercepting Bryce Young to close out the win.
There will be little time to dwell on the result, as the Browns host the Pittsburgh Steelers on a short week Thursday, October 1, kicking off at 8:15 p.m. ET from Huntington Bank Field.
