Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns had won three straight one-score games, so the Week 5 trip to MetLife Stadium looked like a chance to stack another. Instead, the Browns fell 17-12 to the New York Jets in the rain, as the quarterback went 15 of 33 for 155 yards and took eight sacks behind an offensive line that kept caving in.
The offense finished with 198 total yards, and the Browns’ defense had bounced back from a 90-yard touchdown drive to open the game, recovering two fumbles and sacking Geno Smith four times.
Linebacker Carson Schwesinger was a big part of that effort. Through five games, the former UCLA walk-on leads the Browns with 43 tackles.

During the week, the NFL fined the second-year linebacker $14,899 for unnecessary roughness. The league cited helmet use on a second-quarter tackle that drew no flag from the officials during the game.
That punishment followed a day in which Schwesinger recorded eight tackles, a sack and a pass breakup while dealing with a Grade 1 ankle sprain.
His late strip-sack of Smith set the offense up in Jets territory with a chance to protect the lead, but the unit went three-and-out and had to punt, which led to the costly snap.
The ankle injury also leaves his status uncertain heading into the next matchup. Reports indicate Schwesinger (ankle) is also expected to work out pregame. However, there’s optimism that the linebacker will be able to suit up.
Meanwhile, Browns RB Quinshon Judkins (ankle) will test his injury during pregame warmups before a decision is made on his availability.
Selected 33rd overall by Cleveland in the 2025 draft, he went on to lead all first-year players in tackles as a rookie while adding 11 tackles for loss and two interceptions. That earned him AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, joining Chip Banks, who won it in 1982, as the only Browns players to take the award.
The Browns’ next test is a divisional matchup with the 4-1 Baltimore Ravens, who will be without Lamar Jackson. Kickoff against the Ravens is set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 18, at Huntington Bank Field, with FOX carrying the broadcast.
