Jerry Jones has already made one in-season trade for the Dallas Cowboys, and at least one rival general manager expects another. Writing for Casino.guru, Jason La Canfora reported that a GM who has traded with Jones before told him this past weekend, “Oh, Jerry is definitely doing something else,” before adding, “He’s still looking around.”
That lines up with The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones, who wrote that a source told him Dallas will turn over every stone to fix the defense before the Nov. 10 deadline. La Canfora added that Jones was clearly upset after the Cowboys’ 24-16 loss to a previously winless Tampa Bay team on Oct. 8.
Why Dallas keeps shopping for defense

The Cowboys entered Week 6 ranked 31st in yards allowed and 25th in points allowed, giving up 27.2 points per game. That comes after Dallas sent a 2027 first-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick and Mazi Smith to the Jets for Quinnen Williams at last year’s deadline, then added Rashan Gary this offseason and Joey Porter Jr. on Oct. 1. The staff felt the strain too, with Dallas hiring Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant on Oct. 12 to support coordinator Christian Parker.
Porter has played one game for Dallas. He missed the Tampa Bay loss with an illness and was limited Wednesday with an ankle injury.
The trade pile is thinner than it was a year ago. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox noted Dallas has already dealt a 2027 first, its 2027 third and its 2028 second, and he listed a marquee pass rusher like Khalil Mack, another cornerback, a linebacker or a versatile safety like Budda Baker as options. The Cowboys still hold Green Bay’s 2027 first-round pick and have about $16.9 million in cap space, per Over the Cap.
That Packers pick is the one chip Jones should guard, so “something else” most likely means a mid-round rental. Mack fits that profile. He tops Bleacher Report’s trade block board, he is 35 on a one-year deal with the 0-5 Chargers, and the board projects a conditional 2027 fourth-round pick as the price. Mack also carries a 75.8 PFF grade with 14 pressures, which would help a pass rush La Canfora called suspect. Baker, signed through 2027, would cost more.
Fans across North Texas will get another look at how much help this defense needs Sunday night in Green Bay.
