Does the NFL need to change its overtime rules?
The league had multiple games go into overtime on Sunday, highlighted by the disastrous tie between the Washington Commanders and the New York Giants. The Commanders and the Giants both had chances to win the game in overtime, only to have disastrous outcomes. Jayden Daniels failed to stop the clock in time to get off a game-winning field goal attempt, as the two teams had to settle for a 27-27 tie.
“I told the guys, ‘Was it a win?’ No. ‘Was it a loss?’ No. It was a tie. ‘How does that make you feel?’ I’m happy it wasn’t a loss and I’m sad it wasn’t a win. So that’s how I feel,” Harbaugh said postgame. “It’s a heck of a lot better than a loss, but it’s not as good as a win. So I know that just sounds so obvious, but that’s kind of how you feel. I mean, we’ve had a lot of these conversations over the years. We’ll take it. We’ll take it right now. We were down 14. Came back, and we got a tie, alright?”
But NFL fans aren’t loving the overtime rules.

Former NFL kicker Lawrence Tynes is confused, too.
“Question @NFL Both teams get a posession in OT. If the first team with the ball posesses it for 9:57 seconds of the allotted 10 mins scored then kicks off and time runs out whats the rule? Additionally what if a team ran it all the way down to 3 seconds and kicked a FG or scored a TD? Does team B get an untimed posession?” he shared.
The rule is there.
“There shall be a maximum of one 10-minute period, even if the second team has not had an opportunity to possess the ball or if its initial possession has not ended. If the score is tied at the end of the period, the game shall result in a tie.”
But NFL fans are pushing for a rules change.
NFL fans want the college football OT rules
In college, each team gets a shot at possessing the ball, and we go on until someone is winning after each series of possessions.
“I don’t know why NFL can’t follow the same OT rule as college football where each team gets equal chance. If you worry about additional time, just give each team one chance and call the game tied if two teams both score,” one fan wrote.
“Just adopt the college rules at this point,” one fan added.
“College football has it better,” one fan added.
Should the NFL adopt college football’s OT rules?
