What was Patrick Mahomes drinking before kickoff on Sunday night?
The Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Indianapolis Colts on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” in Week 2. The Chiefs were coming off a Week 1 win over the Broncos. The Colts, meanwhile, entered Sunday night at 0-2.
Kansas City topped Indianapolis, 33-30, in overtime. The Chiefs topped the Colts with a game-winning field goal. Mahomes and Co. improved to an impressive 2-0 on the season.
But prior to kickoff, NBC’s cameras showed Mahomes drinking a yellow liquid in the locker room. Some NFL fans joked that it looked like Mahomes was drinking limoncello.
What was he actually drinking, though?
NFL fans are convinced that he was drinking a shot of pickle juice. Pickle juice is often used by athletes to help with muscle cramping.
“It had to be pickle juice,” one NFL fan said.
Mahomes has previously opened up about his love of pickle juice
Mahomes says that he’s been drinking pickle juice during games and practices since high school.
“I’ve drank it since high school, actually, so it’s like a little shot. Just got to knock it to the head and not try to taste it as much as possible,” he said back in 2020.
“Well, the pickle juice usually is before, like you try to keep you from cramping. I don’t know … might have to do with the sodium, I think. They try to keep you from cramping.”
Whatever it is, it’s working.
The Chiefs star quarterback had a big game on Sunday evening, throwing for 382 yards and three touchdowns on 32 of 47 passing, as his team improved to an impressive 2-0 on the season.
Kansas City will return to play in Week 3, taking on the Miami Dolphins on the road. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. E.T. next Sunday.
