After a very long wait, former San Francisco 49ers running back Roger Craig finally got inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame today. But he turned his moment of triumph into a far more somber one with a heartbreaking health announcement.

During his acceptance speech on Saturday, the three-time Super Bowl MVP announced that he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia, which he believes was induced by the concussions he suffered during his career. He said that he hopes his story encourages others to pay better attention to their health and seek help when they feel off.

"Over time, my family noticed it too and ultimately led us to seek answers from my doctor," Craig said. "Two things can be true: Football gave me opportunities beyond anything I could imagine. It helped shape the man I became. At the same time, we know more today about brain health than when I played, and I hope sharing my story encourages people to pay attention to their health and seek help when something doesn't feel right."

"Football gave me everything," Craig added.

"I want people to know this diagnosis doesn't define me. I am still Roger Craig. I am still a father, a husband, a teammate, a friend, and someone who loves this game and the people who brought it to my life. If sharing my story helps even one family or one former player, then it's worth it."

Fans Pay Tribute

In response to the news, fans have offered their sympathies and respects to Craig for his terrible diagnosis:

"Heartbreaking news. Wishing Roger Craig and his family strength," one user wrote on X.

"Such a bittersweet moment. Wishing Roger Craig strength and comfort. He deserves all the love and respect for everything he gave to the game," wrote another.

"Roger Craig using his absolute highest career moment to selflessly shed light on his vascular dementia diagnosis is the definition of a true hero. A legendary player on the field, and an even greater man off it. Sending so much love and respect to a real champion," a third said.
