The NFL has announced a one-game suspension for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw following his altercation with Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV.
ESPN reporter Adam Schefter shared the league’s decision on X, confirming Greenlaw will serve the suspension without pay, “for an act of unsportsmanlike conduct.“
The incident occurred during Sunday’s 32-29 victory over Seattle. Greenlaw was involved in an altercation after tackling Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold near the sideline.
Greenlaw received a penalty for unnecessary roughness before the confrontation escalated. During the ensuing exchange, he headbutted Jones, who was not wearing a helmet.
The NFL determined that Greenlaw violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1. The rule prohibits conduct that goes against the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.
The linebacker was ejected from the game following the incident. Jones was left bleeding after the headbutt, drawing further attention to the confrontation.
Greenlaw’s suspension will keep him out of San Francisco’s Oct. 19 matchup against the Washington Commanders. According to the NFL, he will be eligible to return to the active roster on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
However, Greenlaw still has the option to appeal the decision under the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. Any appeal will be reviewed by one of four jointly appointed hearing officers: Derrick Brooks, Jordy Nelson, Ron Rivera or James Thrash.

The suspension comes as the 49ers prepare for another important game. San Francisco defeated Seattle 32-29 in a closely contested matchup that featured seven combined turnovers.
Greenlaw’s absence could affect the team’s linebacker rotation, particularly alongside defensive leader Fred Warner. The coaching staff may need to rely on Garrett Wallow or Tatum Bethune to help fill the gap.
The NFL’s decision now gives Greenlaw a clear disciplinary outcome following the on-field confrontation. Whether he appeals remains an important factor ahead of San Francisco’s next game.
