The New York Liberty’s jumbotron had some not-so-subtle words for Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham during Saturday night’s game in Brooklyn.
The Liberty hosted the Fever in New York on Saturday night. The Liberty got the big win, 109-102, taking down Caitlin Clark and company. However, during the game, the Liberty’s jumbotron made sure to send a clear message to Cunningham.
New York’s jumbotron singled out transgender WNBA fans during Saturday night’s game. The Liberty made it clear that those fans are welcome and safe during the WNBA games. Cunningham, of course, had previously spoken out against transgender athletes in women’s sports.
“Welcome Trans Liberty fans!” the message read.
“You are loved and you belong!”
Another message read: “Hey trans fans! Glad you’re here! Go Liberty!”
Cunningham, of course, previously spoke out against transgender athletes in women’s sports, saying it’s “common sense.”
Fever guard spoke out against transgender athletes
The Fever guard made it clear that she doesn’t believe that transgender athletes should participate in women’s sports.
Cunningham told ESPN that she thinks it’s “common sense” to bar transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
The veteran Indiana Fever guard added that she wants to “protect young girls in the locker room” and that “they shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
The Fever guard then doubled down while speaking to WNBA reporters.
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham said. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”
Clearly, though, the New York Liberty – and others around the WNBA – don’t seem to agree with her comments.
