Locked On Giants host Patricia Traina said New York Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy will replace Jameis Winston as the Giants’ starter, a move aimed at restoring the designed-run and RPO elements missing from the offense. The immediate test is whether McCarthy’s mobility can create a more functional ground game while giving a reworked attack enough answers against Houston.
Traina’s case for the change centered less on Winston’s professionalism or spot-starting value than on fit. She said the playbook was built with quarterback Jaxson Dart’s movement skills in mind, including RPOs and designed quarterback runs. Winston could operate that offense, Traina argued, but he did not offer the same threat to pull the ball down, escape pressure and force defenses to account for another runner.
That difference could matter most for the backfield. Traina said McCarthy’s presence should make it harder for opponents to load the box, potentially helping running back Cam Skattebo and the rest of the rushing rotation find cleaner lanes. The Giants have struggled to sustain their run game without Dart, and the quarterback switch gives the coaches a chance to test whether scheme fit, rather than simply personnel, has been the bigger obstacle.
McCarthy will not receive an easy introduction. Traina said the Houston Texans bring a formidable pass rush led by edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, while tackles Andrew Thomas, Jermaine Eluemunor and Marcus Mbow did not practice Wednesday. She expects the Giants to counter with quick throws, chips on the edge, RPO looks and a pocket that moves with McCarthy rather than asking him to stay stationary behind a potentially depleted line.
The new starter also must quickly establish timing with wide receiver Malik Nabers and the other primary targets after Winston handled most first-team practice reps. Traina said McCarthy has stayed after practice to work with receivers, but Sunday will reveal how much of that work translates when the offense faces pressure and the game plan expands.
Traina characterized the move as an audition with short- and long-term stakes rather than an irreversible verdict on the quarterback room. She expects Dart to reclaim the starting job next season if healthy, but said a strong McCarthy run could give the club flexibility to keep him, retain him as a backup, or explore a future trade.
McCarthy’s first start will show whether the Giants can translate their preferred offensive identity into production against a difficult matchup. If his mobility lightens the box and buys time behind the line, the change could affect far more than the depth chart at quarterback.
