The Atlanta Falcons will start quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Thursday night at Lambeau Field, placing their 0-2 season in the hands of a player returning from the torn ACL that ended his 2025 campaign. Penix must do more than provide a change at quarterback: He has to help an offense that has not reached the red zone through two games establish some direction against the Green Bay Packers.
The short turnaround makes the assignment more difficult. Penix has had limited time to work in offensive coordinator Tommy Rees’ system before facing a road environment that will test both his command of the offense and Atlanta’s ability to create explosive plays.
Locked On Falcons host Aaron Freeman described Thursday as Penix’s first real test in the new offense, arguing that the quarterback’s ability to acclimate quickly matters as much as the result. Freeman noted that Penix previously entered games cold effectively, but said his earlier experience with a larger practice workload also showed how much time a young quarterback can need to settle into an offense.
Atlanta’s immediate objective is more basic than a complete offensive overhaul. The club is the NFL’s only offense without a red-zone appearance after two weeks. A functional outing would give Rees evidence that the unit can move beyond the turnovers and inconsistent passing game that defined its opening losses.
Freeman’s larger point was that Penix cannot merely manage the game if he is to change the trajectory of the season. He identified downfield accuracy, throws over the middle, and under-center play action as parts of the evaluation, with the deep ball especially important for an offense that has generated little vertical threat.
The matchup also begins a consequential stretch for the quarterback’s standing. Freeman said Penix should not assume he owns the job for the rest of the season, citing performance and the coaching staff’s willingness to make changes. That reflects the pressure surrounding a quarterback room that has already changed starters after two games.
A strong showing would not erase Atlanta’s early problems, but it could give the Falcons a credible foundation entering their Week 4 Monday night trip to the New Orleans Saints. Another stagnant performance would intensify the quarterback debate before the season reaches October.
