NFL fans already thought Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the “golden child” of the league well before this season started. Nonetheless, they just received a lot of ammo from a former quarterback.
Chase Daniel, who played in the NFL from 2009-2022, broke down the roughing the passer penalty that Mahomes drew in Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins. Even though Chop Robinson put a hard hit on Mahomes, you could see him pull up so he doesn’t put all of his body weight directly on the three-time Super Bowl champion.
Despite that gesture from Robinson, he was still hit with a 15-yard penalty. Fans thought it was one of the worst calls Week 3 had to offer.

Well, the outrage surrounding that call is about to get louder. Daniel, who played for the Chiefs from 2013-2015, showed an angle of the play that is destined to stir up a debate online.
The replay angle that Daniel broke down shows the ref grabbing for his flag before Robinson is even done hitting Mahomes.
“That’s a little bit weird. He’s already going to it. He’s pulling for it already,” Daniel said in his video. “That’s crazy. Like the flag is out before he even finishes the act.”
Did the ref actually give Mahomes special treatment?
While it’s no secret NFL refs want to protect quarterbacks, this video from Daniel is a bit misleading. The ref was getting ready to throw a flag for a defensive hold.
Since the officiating crew also thought there was a roughing the passer penalty on the play, it came across as if the ref was anticipating a hard hit on Mahomes.
Of course, that won’t stop fans from accusing the NFL of protecting Mahomes.
